MP Board Exam Pattern 2026-27: Class 9–12 Changes, New Rules and 2027 Dates
Last updated: October 20, 2026 | Reading time: about 9 minutes
On October 15, 2026, the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) changed the question paper rules for Classes 9, 10, 11 and 12. Since then, students, parents and teachers have been asking the same things. Is the syllabus changing? Are the dates different? Will the paper get harder?
Here is the good news. The board has changed how choices work inside the paper, not what you study. In this guide, we explain the new rules in simple words. You will also find class-wise tables, 2027 exam dates and an easy study plan.
What Is the New MP Board Exam Pattern 2026-27?
First, let us understand one term. Internal choice means the paper gives you two questions for one slot, and you answer only one of them. For years, many slots in the MP Board question paper had this option.
Now, in main subjects, the 2-mark very short-answer questions will not have this option. You must answer the question that is printed. However, 3-mark short-answer and 4-mark long-answer questions keep their internal choice. Students of NSQF (National Skills Qualifications Framework) subjects get something new: internal choice in 5-mark long-answer and 7-mark essay-type questions.
Table 1: Revised internal choice rules (MPBSE notice dated October 15, 2026).
The 2-mark questions have not been removed. Only the option to skip one of two questions has gone. So, selective study, where you read only some chapters and hope for easy options, is now riskier.
MPBSE Notice of October 15, 2026: What the Board Said
The notice was issued by the MPBSE secretary from Bhopal on October 15, 2026. It follows decisions taken at the board's Curriculum Committee meeting on August 20, 2025. The Executive Committee approved them on August 28, 2025. The goal is to bring the new question paper pattern for Classes 9 to 12 into the 2026-27 session.
According to a FindMyCollege report, MPBSE Secretary Buddhesh Kumar Vaidya said the Class 9 to 12 exams will follow CBSE standards and include logical reasoning questions. The board will still use its own syllabus and exam system. In other words, the MPBSE exam pattern is moving towards understanding rather than rote learning.
The notice deals only with the question paper pattern. It does not change exam dates or the second exam system. The board has also placed the 2026-27 syllabus and subject-wise marking schemes for Classes 9 to 12 in the Academics section of mpbse.nic.in.
Which Classes and Batches Are Affected?
The rules apply to the 2026-27 academic session. That means students who are in Class 9, 10, 11 or 12 right now. The table below clears the confusion.
Table 2: Class-wise applicability of the MP Board exam pattern 2026-27.
MP Board Class 10 Exam Pattern 2027
For Class 10, the reported pattern is a 75-mark written paper. Out of these, 30 marks are for objective-type questions. The paper has 12 very short-answer questions of 2 marks each. The number of long-answer questions drops from four to three. Three short-answer questions will be asked without the earlier choice. The other 25 marks for regular students come from project and practical work, as per the board's Class 9 and 10 marking scheme.
Table 3: MP Board Class 10 exam pattern 2027 as reported from the October 2026 notice.
Another change affects Class 10 this year. A Madhya Pradesh government order dated December 23, 2024 said the "best of five" method for results ends in Class 9 from 2025-26 and in Class 10 from 2026-27. So, Class 10 students of 2026-27 should plan to pass every subject. Please confirm the current status with your school. Also, always match these numbers with your subject-wise blueprint on the official website.
MP Board Class 12 Exam Pattern 2027
For Class 12 subjects without practicals, the written paper carries 80 marks. It has 10 very short-answer questions, four short-answer questions and four long-answer questions. Subjects with practicals or internal assessment keep those parts as before. NSQF students should check their subject paper for the new 5-mark and 7-mark choices.
Class 12 results matter for college admissions, so read the blueprint closely. Remember that 2-mark questions carry no choice in the MP Board exam pattern 2026-27. A few careless misses here can quietly cost you marks.
What Changes for Class 9 and Class 11 Students?
The same internal choice rules cover Class 9 and Class 11 annual exams. Both classes already had quarterly exams in September 2026. Half-yearly exams are expected in November, but check the board timetable on the official site. Last year, Class 9 and 10 half-yearly exams ran from November 3 to 11, 2025, and Class 11 and 12 from November 3 to 13, 2025.
The 2027 annual exam dates for Classes 9 and 11 were not available in the sources we checked. In 2026, these exams were held from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM. Use the half-yearly exams as a trial run for the new pattern.
MP Board Exam Date 2027: Class 10 and 12 Schedule
MPBSE has already released the 2027 timetable for Class 10 and 12 main and second exams. Theory papers run from 9 AM to 12 noon.

Class 12 begins on February 17 with Biotechnology, Gayan Vadan and Tabla Pakhawaj. On exam days, reach your centre by 8:00 AM and be seated by 8:30 AM. Entry closes at 8:45 AM. Dates can be revised, so confirm them on mpbse.nic.in.
What Is Not Changing: The Second Exam System
Many students mix up this notice with the second exam. They are different things. From the 2025-26 session, MPBSE replaced the old supplementary exam with a second exam for Classes 10 and 12. Students who failed, missed the first exam or want better marks can sit for it. You apply through your school and pay the fee.
The board counts the higher marks from the two exams. For example, if you score 60 in the first exam and 40 in the second, 60 is considered. In 2026, the second exam ran from May 7. It ended on May 19 for Class 10 and May 25 for Class 12. For 2027, the second exam is planned for June.
How to Prepare for the New MP Board Exam Pattern
Here is a simple plan you can start today.
Cover every chapter. With no choice in 2-mark questions, skipping a chapter is risky.
Make a 2-mark notebook. Write definitions, formulas, reasons and one-line differences chapter by chapter.
Practise 3-mark and 4-mark answers. Read both options in the paper, then pick the one you can write best.
Solve sample papers and previous papers. Use a timer so that speed becomes a habit.
Read the marking scheme. Check the 2026-27 blueprint and marking scheme for each subject on the official site.
Practise reasoning questions. The board wants understanding, so try application-based and logical questions too.
NSQF students: practise long answers. The new choices are in 5-mark and 7-mark questions, so write full answers often.
Use half-yearly exams as a mock test. Treat them like the final exam and review mistakes afterwards.
Final Thoughts
The MP Board exam pattern 2026-27 is a small change on paper, but it asks for stronger basics. Learn every chapter, practise short answers, and use the choice in 3-mark and 4-mark questions wisely. Keep an eye on mpbse.nic.in for blueprints and timetables. We will update this guide as soon as the board shares more details.
