Multiple states across India have announced that schools will remain closed from December 8 to December 14, citing regional festivals, administrative events, and local circumstances. Parents and students are advised to check the updated holiday schedules issued by their respective district authorities.

Jammu & Kashmir: Cold wave break

  • Region: Winter‑zone and hilly areas of Jammu & Kashmir.
  • Reason: Week‑long closure from 8–14 December due to severe cold wave, dense fog and early snowfall making travel unsafe for students.

Authorities have also tied this closure into an extended winter vacation schedule for different classes so that younger children spend the coldest phase at home.

Tamil Nadu: Cyclone Ditwah rain

  • Region: Several coastal and interior districts of Tamil Nadu. Exact districts vary by day as per local orders.
  • Reason: Heavy rainfall, flooding risk and strong winds linked to Cyclone Ditwah, prompting “school holiday today/tomorrow” type notices around 8 December.

District administrations have suspended offline classes and, in some pockets, encouraged short online sessions until weather alerts ease.

Kerala: Weather and civic polls

  • Region: Multiple districts across Kerala, especially those under heavy‑rain alerts or involved in local body elections.
  • Reason: Combination of persistent cyclone‑related rain and local body elections, with schools used as polling or counting centres on 9 and 11 December.

On election days many government and private schools remain fully closed, even where rainfall is moderate, creating a mixed pattern of open and closed days.

Andhra Pradesh and other coastal belts

  • Region: Selected districts in Andhra Pradesh and nearby coastal areas.
  • Reason: Adverse weather bands from Cyclone Ditwah causing intense showers, waterlogging and transport disruption, leading to precautionary holidays in sensitive zones.

Local officials update school status almost daily, so parents are urged to track district‑wise alerts closely.

Maharashtra: Local weather and admin reasons

  • Region: Specific districts such as Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nashik and a few others with local orders.
  • Reason: Mix of localized heavy rain, foggy or chilly mornings, teacher‑related disruptions and civic or election preparations causing selective school closures and timetable changes.

Some areas only adjust timings for early‑morning cold, while a few urban pockets declare full or partial holidays on particular days.

What This Means for Students & Parents

  • Families in the affected regions should check with their local schools/district authorities before planning.
  • Students should stay alert for official circulars: some closures are “on-call,” depending on weather or administrative updates.
  • In places like Jammu and Kashmir, the break is part of a longer winter vacation rather than a short-term disruption.
  • In states with election-related holidays (like Kerala), the closures are limited to election dates and may not cover the entire period.

Official Advisory

Education departments have reminded schools and parents to stay alert for any last-minute changes in schedules due to local requirements. Updated notifications will be shared through official school portals, district websites, and circulars.
