Himachal Pradesh Government has unveiled a sweeping educational reform that promises to raise the bar for schooling across the state. From the next academic session, 100 government senior secondary schools will be re-affiliated under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), offering rural and semi-urban students access to nationally benchmarked education standards.
According to official documents, the decision reflects a clear strategy: to curb the migration of students from government to private schools, and to ensure equitable access to quality education, irrespective of location. Under this plan, at least one CBSE school will be opened in every Assembly constituency, making sure no region is left behind.
Beyond just a curriculum change, these CBSE-pattern schools will be envisioned as holistic learning hubs. They will offer smart classrooms, English-medium teaching from Class I, day-boarding facilities with nutritious meals, and additional support such as counselling, remedial teaching, sports, skilling, arts, mentoring and career guidance.
To ensure quality, the government plans to create a new “CBSE sub-cadre” for teachers and staff — selection of principals, teachers, and non-teaching staff will be merit-based, considering academic excellence and co-curricular involvement. A performance-based incentive scheme (monetary and non-monetary) will also be introduced to motivate educators.
State officials believe this move will significantly boost educational competitiveness for students, especially those aiming for national-level competitive exams. It is expected to open more avenues for higher education and professional careers for rural youth, helping bridge urban-rural disparities.
